Reimagining Tracking and Surveillance of Diseases in the Cloud

As the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) embarked on an initiative to modernize its National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS), the team leading the charge was met with a disheartening warning from stakeholders on the project: “You’re never going to change the way public health operates.”

Epidemiologists who had used the National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) Base System (NBS) for years could not see how real change could occur inside the aging infrastructure. How could the CDC improve the NBS system while expanding its adoption and usership? And was there a way to build trust with overburdened and skeptical health departments and users? To answer these questions, the CDC partnered with Enquizit, technical cloud consultants with a long history of using human-centered design (HCD) to help federal agencies achieve digital and cultural transformation.

In this eBook, we explore the steps that Enquizit used to transform the NBS system and improve the working lives of epidemiologists nationally.
